Dimtu Tero is a processing station. In addition to its own 151-hectare farm, Dimtu purchases cherries from 416 other growers. It is also notable that the entire harvest area is forested with original vegetation.
Young Getachew Zekele experienced the transformation during which coffee began to be cultivated commercially in Guji, as a child. When he grew up, he became part of it. Although Getachew chose a career in coffee, he grew up in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. The Zekele family moved south for work opportunities for Getachew’s father. That decision paved the way for Getachew’s work in coffee.
Getachew remembers how his parents introduced him to a community of coffee lovers. “Coffee is a highly respected crop in the area where I settled. The community uses coffee as a food during rituals and ceremonies and also as a means of blessing traditional leaders, Abba Gadaa,” explains Getachew.
In 2010 he entered the coffee market through ASB Coffee Exporting Company. Two years later Getachew opened a washing and pulping station in the Dimtu Tero and Uraga districts. The two new coffee-producing sites quickly gained a reputation in the local community. His final step came in 2016 when he opened the Dimtu Tero farm.
Dimtu Tero, also known as Dimtu Plantation, is a 151-hectare semi-forest farm. You cannot see where the farm begins and ends because it is part of the Guji forests. Getachew aims to keep nature intact. Thanks to producing organic coffee, the farm has NOP, EU, and JAS certifications. This is unique for Ethiopian coffee farms. On a farm tour, Getachew will proudly show you the 74110 and 74112 varieties. These disease-resistant varieties were developed in 1974 by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center.
Getachew builds his philosophy on inclusive growth. As Dimtu Tero grows, external growers benefit as well. At each harvest, 416 external growers receive a premium price that gives them room to develop their farms and family lives. Getachew believes that growing together with the local community leads to greatness. “I want to be one of the leading producers, processors and exporters of coffee in the country—trusted by customers for quality, traceability and sustainability,” Getachew says boldly.
